REVIEW OF THE LIES OF WAYNE WEST AND SHIRLEY RICHARDS ON “RELIGIOUS HARDTALK”

On Tuesday September 18, 2012, Television Jamaica(TVJ) aired the programme “Religious Hardtalk” hosted by Ian Boyne where he brought on popular anti-gay activists Shirley Richards, attorney and former head of the Lawyer’s Christian Fellowship, and Dr. Wayne West who is a senior lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Mona(UWI) and a consultant radiologist.

Despite the fact that the previous week’s discussion was limited mainly to the topic of atheism and secularism, Ian Boyne decided to allow these two activists to have their time to speak about homosexuality and abortion even though it is a programme created for religious discussion. Surely, atheism and secularism is not necessarily an opposing argument to the pro-life and anti-gay arguments about homosexuality so the LGBT community needs to have a rebuttal to Tuesday’s programme and do so fast.

Marc Ramsay’s ignorance: Example of the usual anti-gay scientific misuse.

Here at AGFC we do not apologise for debunking the scientifically-challenged anti-gay lobby, even if we have to go back in history. In November, 2011 a Christian lawyer by the name of Mark Ramsay decided to try and offer an “intelligent” defence of the buggery law.

Ignorance is truly bliss.

STUDY: HOMOPHOBIC SOCIAL PRESSURES CORRELATES WITH VIOLENCE IN GAY RELATIONSHIPS

No surprise to AGFC, homophobia has been proven over and over to be a destructive phenomenon that tears at the very fabric of society.

A new study shows that in six countries, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) among gays correlated with  experiences of homophobic discrimination, internalised homophobia and heterosexist social pressures.

NEW STUDY SHOWS BLACK MSM HIV PREVALENCE HIGHER IN COUNTRIES THAT CRIMINALISE HOMOSEXUALITY

At AGFC we love science especially because we know it also always proves the scientifically challenged anti-gay religious movement wrong.

Many anti-gay activists in Jamaica make the claim that anti-homosexual laws do not contribute to the higher prevalence rate seen in countries that criminalise homosexuality. Is idea this supported by peer-reviewed modern science?

A new study on HIV in the African diaspora has been released in The Lancet on July 28th, 2012. The Lancet is the second highest ranking medical journal in the world.

The Abstract can be found here:  http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(12)60722-3/abstract

Study on “Experiences of Stigma and Discrimination among Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) in Jamaica”

Study can be found here: http://www.c-changeprogram.org/sites/default/files/Stigma-MSM-Jamaica.pdf

.

My summary of the study:

.

Experiences of Stigma and Discrimination among Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) in Jamaica

The research characterized stigma and discrimination as actions, deeds, words, behaviors, and attitudes expressed that deny the dignity, respect and/or rights of MSM. It looked to add depth to the understanding of MSM stigma/discrimination and to supplement what was currently being documented through Jamaican quantitative surveys.
Study findings were consistent with previously published studies in other regions of the world showing that MSM are the target of verbal, nonverbal, and physical stigma, discrimination, and abuse where negative labels, stereotypes, insults, and physical attacks are perpetrated against MSM individuals or groups to deny them dignity, respect, and basic human rights.

Study shows gay Jamaicans have higher rates of mental health issues because of family rejection

While the study has a small sample size and used a convenience sample from human rights and LGBT activist groups, which could signal some bias in my opinion, it is still worthy of notice.

Negative experiences related to one’s sexual orientation, such as eviction and receiving threats of violence also increased the risk for mental health problems.
